Background: Krishnagiri District, one of the backward regions of Tamil Nadu, has a literacy rate of 71.50%, the third lowest in the state according to the 2011 census. Literacy among women is even lower at 63.91%. The multilingual nature of the district, being a border area with Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, poses additional barriers to quality education. Many girls drop out of school after 8th grade due to economic hardship, distance from schools, and lack of transportation, leading to early marriages. In response to these challenges, ARCOD proposed an intervention to support girls’ education in Shoolagiri block. LUMINOUS approved the project, which began in September 2018.
